What is Perfect Bound Booklet Printing?

Method of bookbinding where a flexible adhesive attaches a paper cover to the spine of the assembled signatures is called perfect binding. Perfect binding puts all the pages or signatures together, roughens and flattens the edge, then a flexible adhesive attaches the paper cover to the spine. Paperback novels are one example of perfect binding. Booklets, telephone directories, and some magazines use perfect binding methods. Compared to other binding methods, perfect binding is quite durable and has a low to medium cost. It can be used with publications that are several inches thick. The Perfect Bound Books we print and produce come in two sizes, the most popular being 8.5×11 inch or the half-size 5.5×8.5 booklets and catalogs which are also a popular design.

Perfect Binding Catalogs vs. Saddle Stitching Booklets

Perfect Binding goes by many names depending on the specific process involved, but generically, perfect binding is similar to book binding whereby the folded signatures of a booklet are collated and the excess paper on the binding edge is ground off and glued, or sewn, into a cover forming a spine.

Saddle-stitching does not have a spine. The printed catalog signatures are folded and stitched (stapled) at the binding edge before trimming. Saddle-stitch binding has a page limit, so your choice does depend on your project.

Perfect Binding is a widely used soft cover book binding method. With this binding method, the pages and cover are glued together at the spine with a strong yet flexible thermal glue. The other three sides of the book are then trimmed as needed to give them clean “perfect” edges.

Unlike our regular Multi-Page Booklets, the page count specified in the product name does not include the cover. E.g. “8.5 x 11, 52-Pages” will require you to upload 52 inside pages + a cover file (which is always 4:0). Templates are available for the covers of the Perfect Bound Booklets and relate to the number of inside pages. The normal 8.5×11 and 8.5×5.5 flat, Flyer templates can be used for all the inside pages. Templates are available for both the cover and inside pages of the perfect bound books.
